Earning a Black Belt is the beginning, not the end. Here is the two-stage path — from School Black Belt to Federation Dan rank — with every application and form you need.
A new Black Belt is earned in two steps. First you achieve your School Black Belt. Then — no sooner than six months after that promotion — you may test for your Federation Black Belt (Dan) through the United States Taekwondo Won (USTW).
Test within the academy to earn your School Black Belt rank (e.g. 1st School). This confirms you have mastered the full color-belt curriculum and are ready to carry the responsibilities of a Black Belt.
After holding your School Black Belt for a minimum of 6 months, you may test for your Federation Dan rank (e.g. 1st Dan) through the USTW. Upon passing, submit your USTW membership application to formalize your rank.
Download each form below. Complete and submit them to your instructor before test day — every form is also available at the dojang.
The official academy application to test for your School Black Belt. Complete it in full, have your instructor sign off, and submit it with your testing fee before test day.
The current fee schedule for Black Belt promotion testing. Fees are set by rank and due before test day — bring your completed form and fee to the dojang.
The United States Taekwondo Won (USTW) application required to test for your Federation Dan rank. Submit this once you have held your School Black Belt for the minimum 6 months and your instructor has approved you to test.
Eligibility: Black Belt promotion testing is by invitation. Your instructor confirms your readiness and the minimum 6-month hold between your School promotion and Dan test before a test is scheduled. Never assume you are on the list.
